Welcome — get your device ready
This guide walks you through the secure, out-of-the-box setup for a hardware wallet. You’ll learn how to unbox, initialize, create a recovery seed, and perform basic safety checks. Follow each step slowly — your private keys must never leave the device.
Before you begin
Only use the official desktop app or the manufacturer’s website for firmware updates. Do not install third-party firmware, and never share your recovery words with anyone — not even support.
Step-by-step setup
- 1. Unbox & inspect. Inspect packaging for tamper evidence. Only proceed if the packaging and seal look intact.
- 2. Connect to the official app. Use the manufacturer’s official software on a modern OS. Launch the app before connecting the device.
- 3. Initialize the device. Choose “Create new wallet.” Create a PIN directly on the device; this PIN protects against local theft.
- 4. Record your recovery seed. The device will display a 12-24 word recovery phrase. Write it down on paper or a metal backup — do NOT take photos.
- 5. Verify the phrase. The device will ask you to confirm a few words. This ensures the seed was recorded correctly.
- 6. Update firmware. If prompted, update firmware through the official app. Firmware updates include security improvements — verify the update origin.
- 7. Send a test transaction. Send a small amount to confirm you can receive and send funds. Use a small test amount before larger transfers.
Cold storage
Private keys are generated and stored offline on the device; transactions are signed without exposing keys to your computer.
PIN & passphrase
A PIN protects local access. Optionally add a passphrase for an additional hidden wallet layer.
Verified firmware
Only install signed firmware from official sources. Firmware ensures the device behaves as expected.
